Hacky Sack or HackyZack? - Review (Switch)

HackyZack is a puzzle platformer that is all about kicking various types of balls into a goal. Sounds simple, right? Well think again. Though the premise is simple the execution is not so much. We know very little about Zack and why he’s kicking these balls around and, to be honest, that’s okay. A game like this doesn’t need some grand story to explain why he is doing what he is doing you just need to dive in and experience it.

Journey Across Bits And Pixels In The Messenger - Review (PC)

Following in the footsteps of the recent explosion of 8-bit and 16-bit retro throwbacks, The Messenger aims to lure players in with its nostalgia and keep them around with versatile platforming and fast paced action. As the first game from new developer Sabotage Studio, The Messenger does a good job of making you feel like a badass and a lightning quick ninja, and adds a unique twist in combining both 8 bit and 16 bit art styles. The focus here is on rapid and frantic movement as you dodge, glide, leap, and rappel your way through levels. There's not a whole lot here that is new, but it is fun and invigorating nonetheless.

Explore All the Colors of the Rainbow in Spectrum - Review (Switch)

Spectrum could easily be viewed as an N++ clone, but dismissing it as such would be a disservice to both games. While the first few levels play out similarly to those in N++, in no time at all Spectrum begins to separate itself and stand on its own two feet. With over eighty levels spread out over eight different environments, Spectrum will keep you busy for a long time. Completing the levels is not nearly enough and you’ll find yourself going back again and again to master them.

HYPERGUN - Review (PC)

Chances are when aliens finally do attack, we will have little time to react and formulate a plan of action. But if the belligerent extraterrestrials were so kind as to provide us with a bit of advanced notice, how would we go about creating an effective arsenal to defend ourselves with? Developer NVYVE Studios has the answer with its new rougelite first person shooter, HYPERGUN. It gives the player a near unlimited amount of weapon combinations to experiment with in an effort to give mankind a fighting chance against unwelcome invaders. It unfortunately falters with its inability to have the same creative approach to challenge as it does with weapon configuration.

Gucamelee! 2 Shines As One Of The Best In Its Genre - Review (PS4)

Since the release of the first Guacamelee!, and also the lesser known Mutant Blobs Attack, Drinkbox Studios has become one of the premiere indie game studios. Known for their signature art style of bright contrasting colors with a simplistic but also superb aesthetic, they've caught the attention of many fans. Following up the more experimental touch-based game Severed, Drinkbox has returned the world of luchadors and fighting chickens with Guacamelee! 2. At first glance, it might look like a pretty basic retread of the original with beat'em up combat and a drip feed of new moves and abilities. Look past the surface though, and Guacamelee! 2 is much more than a simple revamp of its predecessor with a fresh coat of paint.

Graveyard Keeper Is Worthy To Keep From Getting Buried - Review (PC)

Look both ways when you cross the street; otherwise, Graveyard Keeper could provide an explanation for the age old question of, "What is beyond this life?" According to the developers from Lazy Bear Games, the afterlife is full of bouncing cognizant skulls, autopsies, burials, cannibalism, local politics, and apparently the expectation to either become a preacher or join a cult. Sounds pretty run of the mill, right? Sure, this game can easily be analogized to Stardew Valley and other similar games, but there are a myriad of other reasons as to why this is only a shallow description of Graveyard Keeper.

Should You Take Your Joy Before Playing We Happy Few? - Review (PC)

Though only the second game to date from Compulsion Games, We Happy Few proves one thing about the studio – they know how to create a captivating world to explore. The studio's follow up to 2013’s Contrast is an incredibly ambitious title that has grown leaps and bounds since it first hit Early Access nearly two years ago. Their ambition growth as a team paid off in some ways and in other ways they seemed to miss the mark.

Madden '19 Takes Home the Lombardi - Review (XB1)

Madden ’18 was a return to form for a series that was in desperate need of a fresh start. It’s easy to dismiss games that have yearly iterations as more of the same but, with ’18, not only did they make major improvements to the gameplay and overall fun factor - they added a single player story campaign for the first time with the incredibly popular Longshot mode. Madden ’19 takes everything that was good about ’18 and improves on it in almost every way and even brings back Longshot for season two, making this the best Madden game of the generation.
